Does consulting a psychotherapist make sense for my child?
Let’s be clear: occasional tantrums, your child feeling sad or anxious at times, struggles and conflicts between you and your child every so often -- these are all good signs! Your child is growing, carving out his or her own space in the world! Most of the struggles that occur along the way get resolved creatively by the child, often with the support of the parent/s.
However, it could be that you and/or your child are ‘stuck.’ You might feel stumped by the fact that your good efforts and the best of your intentions don’t seem to produce a solution. The problem seems to insist in a stubborn way! If this is the case, it might be a good idea for us to get together to give you some time and a place to express your worries and concerns. Although some are reluctant at first, in my experience parents end up relieved and happy to be able to talk about their children and themselves. These initial conversations can start to clarify some things and will shed some light on what course of action would be best indicated to help you and your child move forward, and overcome his or her current emotional and behavioral hurdles.
